I knew going in I probably wouldn't like this book, but my wife recommended it so I started it. Just couldn't finish it. Too many gross scenes... rotting bodies dripping maggots from a tree on a guy, etc. Yuk. Not for me. If you're not squeamish the characters are cool, and the story is probably okay. I just couldn't get past all the rotting flesh, etc.

Flesh and Bone A Body Farm Novel Jefferson Bass 9780060759841 Books Reviews

An okay read but nothing spectacular.

Part of the problem is Bass gives us a bit too much explanation about things - like AFIS and fingerprints - almost all mystery readers are familiar with.

There is a heavy creation vs. evolution issue introduced partway through the book that reads like it's going to be a major (or at least critical) part of the story because the main character is suspended from his job and faces a civil suit for his remarks. Instead the whole thing just sort of fades away like a dying firework burst.

And the main character seems very naïve and out of touch with the real world for such an well-educated late middle-aged man. And his fumbling, bumbling interactions with a potential love interest make him seem like a nervous teen boy.

I didn't understand the rationale behind breaking this book into two parts - 'Before' and 'After' - when the 'After' comes immediately on the heels of the 'Before.'

This, however, is one of the most fouled up downloads I've ever had.
1/ As usual, there was the oddball line arrangement common to almost every book.
2/ The overall layout was very messed up - what should be two or three paragraphs were mashed into one all over the novel.
3/ It also consistently showed decade as de cade, service as ser vice, about as ab out, panties as pan ties (twice on one page), and a host of similar goofs involving many words.
The body farm is easy to imagine because I watch Bones, the TV show.

I love Jessamine Carter, the ME for Chattanooga, currently filling in for Knoxville as well. She drives a red Carrera, that fits her personality and allows her to cut travel time off her commute.

“Do men really believe that’s what six inches looks like? Try three and a half.”

Humor and death do go hand in hand, don’t they?

Dr. Brockton, is a forensic anthropologist and professor at the University of Tennessee and stages bodies at the body farm for research. I found myself chuckling at the writing even though the scenes were gruesome.

Jess and the doc are an item. She takes charge of that too. The banter between them is is humorous, snarky and fun, the teasing laced with sexual innuendo. They are complex characters and Jefferson Bass does a great job of bringing them to life. I must warn you though, he isn’t afraid to kill off his characters, so be careful who you become attached to.

Oops…didn’t see that coming. Now the real investigation begins. The details of deciphering clues, step by step, are stories I love to read about.

The writing is not as heavy and dark as some of the thrillers I have read, but it does raise a serious question for me. Why do we feel that by refusing to talk to the police, without a lawyer present, automatically makes us guilty. Just because you’re innocent, doesn’t mean the justice system will find that. Sometimes, instead of using clues to find the answer, they assume the answer and look for clues to make the pieces fit. I watch enough True Crime, and the crime TV shows to know this. That makes it easy for me to relate to what is coming down and it truly pisses me off.

Tragedy, love, sacrifice, revenge, anger and rage. Complex and fully developed characters allow me to sympathize and empathize with them, hoping they will find the answers they are looking for.

I didn’t see the ending happening the way it did, but I loved the dramatic flourish. Full of all the details for a great murder mystery with some thrills and suspense thrown in, along with characters to die for.

Talk about being close to your work, be sure and check out the bio of this fantastic writing duo.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Flesh and Bone by Jefferson Bass.
I liked the first book in this series enough to read the second book. Sadly, I was very disappointed. I agree with most of the other 1 & 2 star reviews. First and foremost, the authors tirade against creationism included inaccurate statements on the topic of creationism vs evolution, was highly offensive & totally unnecessary to the story. (This is the reason I will not be reading any more books in this series.) Beyond that, the story was over all tedious, stupid and soooo predictable.
I've had this book on my kindle for awhile now, but never got around to reading it until I won another book off Goodreads. It was #12 in the series, so I thought I'd read this first, since its book #2. I'd been looking for a new forensic science author for a few years, since I've grown real fed-up with Patricia Cornwall and her Scarpetta character. This author duo, Jefferson Bass, might just be what I was looking for! I loved the mystery. There was a whole lot of mysteries in this book, and it was smooth, dastardly, and kind of unputdownable! So, I will be reading more of the books. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is because it was at times, in the beginning, repetitive. Also, while I also believe that creationists are a bizarre bunch, and fairly delusional, the author expounded on the absurdities of creationism a bit much. Repeatedly. I get that he doesn't believe in it either, but to denigrate and make fun of someone's beliefs "no matter how absurd," just seemed pointless. Yes, Science rocks, but....Also, in the second half of the book, words were broken up, and it started to get annoying. Pan-ties were mentioned at least ten times. My first thought was, what the heck are pan-ties? Yep, panties! That cracked me up! But, all in all, the suspense and the who-dun-it won me over. Hopefully, as the books proceed the authors will have better editing, and be a wee bit less preachy. Yep, I'd recommend this story.
I knew going in I probably wouldn't like this book, but my wife recommended it so I started it. Just couldn't finish it.
